I love this stuff, I can watch hours of it. I used to download whole packs of it from UKnova but there's plenty on YouTube now. Even the stuff from before my time is fascinating. Here's the BBC idents from 97 to 02-

Suprising because although I remember them fondly, and vividly, I don't seem to remember them being quite that creepy. They're nice, though. I'd love them back. Well actually no, I'd prefer new ones that aren't as awful as the actual new ones.
The new BBC Two idents, however, are top drawer.

It's a bit bleak, but I think it's excellent. Looks expensive but in a pointless flashy way a la the BBC One idents.
Then there's the closing down-

Me and bonce agree this is a weird memory, because we were both still quite young when they stopped closing down to put on News 24 instead (JESUS, NOBODY NEEDS THAT MUCH NEWS). I kind of like the closing down, it's quaint and a bit eerie. I remember it feeling a bit eerie on the rare occasions when I'd be up that late and the test card would loop. In fact, I've made an hour long sonic art piece around the BBC shut down and test card, but I will definitely spare you that.
Adverts-

If you click on that guys username, you'll see he's uploaded loads of adverts from 1988. I love really old adverts, they're really quite simple and there's an innocence to them you don't get anymore. Oh, and lots of sexism and racism. And adverts for electricity and gas. I don't get those, why did they need to advertise electricity? Not a brand, but just electricity. |

Yeah. I've downloaded all of that stuff from UKNova too. There's an advert torrent on there now I think that I might go and grab.
Although one bloke did put up something like a 20 part set of continuity from the 80's and I gave up after part 4 cos it was too hard to keep up with the torrents. |

Oh yeah, Victor Lewis-Smith (pretty much a predecessor of the likes of Charlie Brooker) did a look at the history of TV idents on his TV Hell show back in the early nineties..

His prank calls are worth a listen too, in particularly the Guinness Book of Records one. |

| TV Offal is pretty amazing in terms of research, it's great how much stuff he dug up for it and his other projects. But it basically ended his TV career, thus confirming television must be bland to make it these days. |

Yeah, its a real shame.
Nowadays apparently the only TV work he does is write those Channel 4 documentaries for Keith Allen (latest being the Tourette's bus one) and something about the organ works of Bach on BBC2 (which I didn't know, but that must be....er....interesting).
Also, don't think anyone will remember this, but he produced that documentary a few years ago about an obsessive eccentric weirdo called Benjamin Pell who used to steal rubbish from the bins of the rich and famous in the hope of finding important documents, to sell to the media which often landed him in trouble with the law. I actually remember watching this, god knows whats happened to him now. |

| Brooker looks like a paedophile walrus, but VLS looks like pot bellied middle class rasta, either way you've got odd taste in men. |

| Well, at least it's varied. Those collages are always more disturbing when occupied by only one person, but the overbearing prescence of Julian Barratt goes some of the way towards making up for that. |

Don't let a silly crack addiction get in the way of love based entirely on his likeness to a well known comedian, lock him in a room and play him every anti drugs record ever released.
It's not scientific, I haven't thought it through. |
