Not sure if this film is out in the UK yet, or even if it's coming out. But I'll save you the bother. It's rubbish. It is rubbish.
I went to see it because some friends wanted to see it.....and I heard it was kind of American Pie-ish (which I like...well the first two anyway)...so I thought it might be a bit of a giggle.
Wrong. If you're idea of comedy is a fat teenager saying "fuck" and "pussy" every 30 seconds then it could be the film for you (Actually that sounds funnier than the film turned out to be).
It's been getting great reviews over here for some reason, they're trying to make out it's some bittersweet tale of teenagers golden summers, growing up, longing and dreaming and all of that...but it's not. It's just childish and the filmmakers obviously think that swearing is big and clever and that underage drinking, womens periods and drawings of cocks are comedy gold. Terrible. And the characters are just annoying and not at all likable like they are in American Pie.
The friends we went with who usually have good taste thought it was hilarious and were in stitches throughout. I was actually kind of embarrased that I didn't share their enthusiasm for it. :|
Can't wait to hear what Kermode thinks about it on Five Live. |

If Kermode ever comes back from that holiday!
It comes out over here in a couple of weeks, and it's a film I've been looking forward to for a long time. Jonah Hill is born comedy. He evened made me laugh during the preachy shitstorm that was Evan Almighty, so yes, him saying fuck and pussy does sound pretty awesome.
Did you catch Knocked Up? I've heard comparisons with that, mainly as it's the same people behind the camera, not due to story or even style of film, this one basically being not as sophisticated.
Anyway, your dismay has not left me even one iota less enthused about Sept 14th. It's gonna be the most awesome thing since the last Justin Long film. |

I dunno. I didn't like the Jonah Hill character at all. I thought he just over-acted in all his scenes and I failed to warm to his character in any way. Out of all three of the main male characters I quite liked Michael Cera as 'Evan'...but even he couldn't rescue the film for me. It's just childish and I really can't understand how all the critics are making it out to be anything more than a "oh aren't we clever for swearing and drinking etc.." teen comedy. I did laugh at the two Policemen in it a few times but even they got on my nerves by the end of it.
But it got 88% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes so I must be in the minority! :) |

The trailer for it certainly didn't look that bad. There were some lame jokes but I laughed once or twice in the trailer alone. Which is more than can be said for the entire American Pie film.
You crazy, Chappo. |

| Well they always put the funny bits in the trailers don't they? That would be about 30 seconds worth then. |

Fucking hell! I've just been looking around online and it looks like almost the entire population of the world thinks Superbad is the best comedy of the year.
I'm not being contrary just for effect I promise. I was genuinely surprised when I saw the 88% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes the morning after I saw it because I honestly thought it would be panned by anyone with any sense. (I'd not read any reviews of it before I saw it..we decided to see it on the spur of the moment).
I honestly thought it was terrible. I didn't even think it was "not bad".
I think the word I used right afterwards was "shite" and Mrs Chappo agreed. Imagine my surprise when I see that everyone else thinks it's the dogs bollocks.
The worse part is how critics are trying to make out there is some deeper, more serious subtext about "coming of age" and "sexual awareness" running through the film. This is just bollocks..there is nothing of the sort.
I don't get it at all. Did I have my "sense of humour" gene removed earlier in the day I wonder??? What the hell is happening to me? :|
I am totally fucking puzzled by this. More puzzled than I am about the appeal of Star Wars.
wow.

If you had to use an adjective to describe how bad you think it is, what would that be?
I find myself like that with some films - how can people not see all the Bourne films for the trek of averageness that they are? And what was Pan's Labyrinth all about?
Right, I'm starting a new thread. |

| Maybe you're just too old! I remember I made my parents watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off and they said it was complete shit. I realised at that moment that I was infinitely cooler than them. |

| It's possible I am too old, I'm not 13 anymore, but one of the people I saw it with is a phd student and is only 2 years younger than me and he was quite literally crying with laughter throughout it. I like a good bawdy sex based comedy as much as anyone but this one just had no redeeming features in my opinion. |
