stupid article if you ask me
it just stinks of 'things were better in my day'
i mean for a start how do you even define indie? according to that article it just seems to be bands that play rock/pop and are on the fringes/inside the mainstream, which is a pretty dull and narrow point of view. new music is great right now, there's no age, health, fleet foxes, beach house, slow club, ponytail, the mae shi, jay reatard, dan deacon, crystal castles + many more i can't remember off the top of my head. some of those bands have already made classic albums in my opinion and the others have the potential to. |

I can see why you would think that it sounds a bit "things were better in my day" but it raises some interesting points. It's also not saying that there is no good music around today, it's more about the way the bands are handled by the industry.
"Indie" is now used to describe a genre of music and is used to describe any band that has a guitar player it seems to me. Even if the band is signed to a major label they are described as "indie" these days.
Indie music used to be "independent" music, independently recorded and released and it had it's own chart and everything. You couldn't walk into a HMV and buy the albums you had to go searching in the Independent record shops for them. That's not to say it was all any good or that it was more worthy music but it did take some effort on the part of the fan to get hold of. To me it seemed a bit like supporting a football team in that a band could start out on a Indie label (lower league) and then after a while be signed by a major label (get promoted to the Premier League). This would be quite exciting and would often take a number of years to happen.
Now there is no "underground" really. The bands just get signed make an album and then disappear mostly. The bands that don't get signed break up.
It's like Emo over here...all the bands are interchangable. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

As an artist about to release his debut single on a completely independent label, I say, good article. _________________ it took me three attempts to register here. |
