(Christmas thread)
Yeah, I know. October. But lately I've been getting so excited about christmas, it always happens to me around this time, then it dies down again until December starts. So come on, indulge me. Anyone have any plans already? I am actually ultra-looking forward (yes, ULTRA) to going and seeking out the nicest parks in landan tan that I can stroll through. One of my favourite things to do at christmas is to wrap up and stroll through a park, especially if it's really foggy. Then come home and drink hot drinks and watch christmas films. I'd kind of exhausted all the decent parks in Bristol so it's gonna be great to see what I can find around here. Victoria park looks so fucking nice from the pictures I've seen on Flickr, so maybe there one day. Actually I dunno when I'm going home for christma,s but it's definitely not until after the 20th. I like the solitude of christmas park strolling but it'd be nice if I could do it with somebody else once, but nobody I know so far would really be suitable for christmas strolling. Well there's this girl in my class who seems to be quite shy, so if she's still shy and hasn't been cracked open by the extroverts by then I might approach her and ask her if she wants to come for a walk with me in the park. Is that something girls would say yes to? Because I basically work on the assumption that all people at university only want to get completely wasted and anything else is pointless, so it might seem a bit weird. Maybe. To be honest I don't really fancy her that much (she's not ugly at all, just y'know) but seeing as she's shy I probably stand a decent chance of finding a good...no that's daft - an acceptable park strolling buddy there. Except of course if it then turns out she's a really nice person who enjoys the same things and I will fall in love with her by the end of the day, rush things, panic, fuck it up, and then there's an awkward situation in every lecture for the next three years. Worth it?
Oh well. My ridiculous life aside, I've been holding off listening to christmas music so far. As I say, I'm usually really into it during October, but this year I've decided to wait because I want it to sound that extra bit special when I do crack open the xmas tunes in December. Most looking forward to Vince Gauraldi's Charlie Brown album, Home Alone soundtracks, traditional carols and of course the playlist of horrible christmas hits that make it seem like christmas to the 9 year old in me. It's funny though, over the past couple of years it's not like I have to enjoy christmas vicariously through some kind of childlike state of mind, I seem to enjoy it in an adult way now, which is great because I did worry that I'd hate it like every other adult seems to.
How about shopping? Too early for shopping talk? Yes. But this year will be great for shopping because if my budgeting goes to plan I will finally be able to actually buy people things. Oh man, christmas shopping is the BEST. I like doing it at night, but most places are shut then.
YOUR GO. |

the best bit about christmas is listening to radiohead cover walking in a winter wonderland on christmas eve on repeat. _________________ it took me three attempts to register here. |

i'm not really in an xmassy mood yet but your thread went someway towards amending that, and you should ask that girl to go for a walk! if i know women, she'll love that. _________________ Carlton Palmer doing his impression of a man with brain damage |

| The park, though. She might think I'll try and drown her in the pond. And that's not what I'm going to do at all. |

I am kind of looking forward to Christmas this year actually. We'll be spending the festive period in Canada which is always fun (we alternate - one year we stay in the USA with Mrs Chappo's family and the next year we stay in Canada with my relatives).
Also this year is the first year since I've been here where I have some left over vacation days to take to extend my Xmas break (Usually you're back at work on Boxing Day here if Xmas falls mid week. So I'm planning to take the rest of Xmas the week off this year)
"Vince Gauraldi's Charlie Brown album" one of Mrs Chappos favourites that one.
I always load up a few Christmas songs on my mp3 player, but usually wait until December is well underway. I have got a few festive mp3s all ready to go...stuff from the radio... Christmas specials of various radio shows etc. I need to get a hold of a "John Peel Festive 50" I think though, that will be nice. I always like to listen to the complete Beatles Christmas Records all in one go when I'm cleaning and tidying the house in the week leading up to Xmas too. This year the house is all painted and decorated how we want it, so it feels all homely and cosy whereas last year it was in a bit of disarray because we hadn't been moved in for very long.
I have one of those silly "The 100 Best Christmas Moments" TV shows I downloaded from UKNova a few years ago that we like to sit and watch with a bottle of wine and a mince pie or two. Mrs Chappo doesn't mind when I get a bit homesick I tell her stories from my past Xmasses in the UK. She'd never heard "Fairytale Of New York" and "Merry Xmas Everybody" until a few years ago for instance, so It's been fun to introduce her to all of that stuff. Not forgetting "Wombling Merry Christmas" of course...my personal favourite!
Take photos in the park Dan if you can!
The other thing I am really looking forward to is getting out in the winter weather, walking by the lake and taking some photos with my new camera. I've decided to embrace the winter this year. Some of the scenery is stunning around where we live and with some snow on it it will look amazing... it'll be nice to capture some of that and stick it on my Flickr page. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. | Oh yeah, I'll definitely take photos. How long does it take you to get to NYC? Or is that where you actually are now? Because it's practically one of my main ambitions to spend a christmas in NYC, I've heard it usually snows. It's mostly to do with Home Alone, I've just always wanted to do it and I need to get it out of my system. Doubt I can afford to stay in that hotel though :( |

It's a 7 hour trip by road to NYC from where we are. We usually try and take a bus trip there in late November / early December (the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas) and spend a day walking around. We've done this for the past 3 years and it really is a lovely thing to do. We're discussing doing this again this year if we think we can afford it.
We've been lucky because the weather has always been nice for us...those nice clear crisp winter days. We walk around the streets and see all the Xmas decoratons and the big tree in the Rockerfeller Center, stop of for a drink every couple of hours and eventually make our way down Broadway and end up at the South Street Seaport where we have dinner at our favourite bar and then the bus picks us up and drives us home! Perfect day.
I'd recommend it. Shame we don't live nearer really as you could come and stay at ours to save you some cash. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

His Beatles impressions are top notch. Love the Ringo in particular:
