i haven't updated my mp3 player since christmas and as i use it at work now i'm frankly getting a little sick of hearing the same songs over and over. tomorrow i'm going to my friend's house who has a good connection and i'm going to sort my mp3 player out and i'm trying to think what albums i've missed/haven't downloaded this year so if anybody could help me out that would be awesome. so far i've got...

arcade fire - neon bible
dizzee rascal - maths and english
editors - end has a start
modest mouse - we were dead before the ship even sank
interpol - our love to admire
art brut - it's a bit complicated
paul mccartney - memory almost full
simian mobile disco - attack decay sustain release
the white stripes - icky thump
calvin harris - i created disco
justice - †
the pigeon detectives - wait for me
björk - volta
manics - send away the tigers
the maccabees - colour it in
shitdisco - kingdom of fear
arctic monkeys - favourite worst nightmare
kings of leon - because of the times
maximo park - our earthly pleasures
good shoes - think before you speak

anything else to recommend/recommend i don't waste my time downloading?

cheers!

Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
The Horrors - Strange House
Dan Deacon - Spiderman of the Rings
The Apples In Stereo - A New Magnetic Wonder
Charlotte Hatherley - The Deep Blue
The Noisettes - What's The Time Mr Wolf?

In that order, I'd say.

Are the Arcade Fire any good? I downloaded their last album Funeral and it was ok, nothing special though. People seem to be wetting themselves over them them but whenever I've seen them on TV I just can't see it myself. They're not bad or anything but... I dunno. They remind me a bit of Dexy Midnight Runners.

It just seems a bit random that they've been singled out to be this supposed amazing band....

Mind you I am living in a cultural vaccum so I'm probably losing my faculties as far as appreciating newer bands.

BTW : The McCartney album is worth a download. I don't like it quite as much as the one before it though.

Funeral is one of my favourite albums, I absolutely love it. They are a bit epic and overblown, but I really like that.

Neon Bible is alright, but I rarely listen to it.

Right. Yeah.

I think they suffer a bit from the Wilco syndrome ie - they're good but the critics go overboard on them and they have a lot of pretentious fans* which puts me off. Then you get him supposedly smashing the camera on Jonathan Ross (oooh rebel!)..it just seems a bit deliberate.....*sigh*
Shame 'cos they're Canadian and I love Canadians!

* at the Wilco concert I was at last month there were a couple sitting next to us who would shout an orgasmic "yeahhhhhh" everytime Nels Cline even tweaked his guitar strings. They calmed down after about 6 songs..good job because I was ready to strangle them!) Luckily I liked Wilco before the critics really caught on and went mental on them.

hmmmmm.....you have to treat Wilco with caution because if you take notice of all the hype they will never live up to it. The critics get all pretentious about them The band themselves are actually not at all pretentious and are very down the earth blokes.

They started as an "alternative country" band but they are far from that now..

I'd say a good way to start would be to download 'A Ghost Is Born' and then 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' and if you like those then try the rest. You tend to have to sit with their albums a bit before they really hit home though. I thought 'A Ghost Is Born' was disappointing at first but it's probably my favourite of their albums now. The new one 'Sky Blue Sky' is still sinking in.

As far as indie folk* of that nature goes, Neutral Milk Hotel pretty much nailed it in one go. If you haven't heard In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, Bill, very definitely get that.

* I realise it's not really folk.

Arcade Fire are on another level - they do some strange ones but some of them, including their new single "No Cars Go" are shit-hot. I saw him on Ross smashing that camera, he's always doing it, though. I'd just had a wank over Fearn Cotton about three minutes before so it was an even better rendition of my favourite song.

Dan, you like The Horrors? Neutral

I liked Sun Volt back in the day...then came Wilco...and yeah they're very Midwest, down-home...good band. But I know, the hype is just beyond...one of my bros has been crazy into them since their inception, but then he likes all the "newer" bands...I dunno...some newer bands I like, but so many sound like the same crap done over and over again. I haven't heard any real novel sounds in forever.

I know what you mean. Wilco still excite me though because every album is a bit different. They DO get hyped to hell though and it pisses me off. But then again they've been around for about 14 years and so I feel as though they are a bit more deserving of the hype that a lot of the newer bands. At the end of the day it's just good songs. Hummingbird is as catchy as hell.

Hummingbird is one of my favorites by them! I like that kazoo sound they have going. Yeah I don't mean to rag on Wilco, they are really good, and they've been around and stood the test of time, but so many bands I think I'm really into, and then I buy their album (singular...the first and only one usually) and listen to it a few times until the magic is gone and they sorta die off....The Killers anyone?
