Shine on, you crazy diamond.
(I stole that from another forum. I've only ever heard 1 Pink Floyd song.) _________________ Carlton Palmer doing his impression of a man with brain damage |

Yeah.
He was a fucking nutcase that one. One of the first real acid casualties of the 60's. (EDIT : THE GUARDIAN STOLE THAT LINE FROM ME!!!) :) Totally fried himself.
I find Barrett's compositions interesting but I wouldn't say they were particularly enjoyable, but then again I've never been a huge Floyd fan although I admire them.
And I definitely don't agree with some music journalist prick I heard on an American radio show once saying that 'Piper At The Gates Of Dawn' was a better album than 'Sgt Pepper's...'. Absolute twaddle! _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

I think it's a more interesting album than Sgt Pepper's. I listened to it again earlier in the old chaps memory, and it's really special. I think you have to like stuff that's a bit weird and anarchic to enjoy it, rather than just admire it.
They definitely lost something when he left, they just didn't sound as intense anymore. I do like the post Barrett stuff, namely The Wall but at times they can sound a bit too bloated and prog for my liking. Wish You Were Here is a stunning album, though.
| Quote: | | Barrett's behaviour became increasingly unpredictable, partly as a consequence of frequent experimentation with psychedelic drugs such as LSD. Many report seeing him on stage with the group, strumming on one chord through the entire concert, or not playing at all. At a show at The Filmore West in San Francisco, during a performance of "Interstellar Overdrive", Barrett slowly detuned his guitar, the audience seemed to enjoy such antics, unaware of the rest of the band's consternation. At another show Waters remembered Barrett putting hair gel (purportedly mixed with crushed Mandrax) on to his head which subsequently melted down his face under the heat of the stage lighting |
What a guy. That's a proper rock star.
Apparently he said that he quite enjoyed seeing 'Floyd at Live 8. Which is suprising, I assumed he just had a complete and utter breakdown and disowned his past entirely. Well, he did to an extent but it's good to know he actually acknowledged them. |

'Piper' does have it's moments I agree and it is interesting, but I think a lot of it's weirdness seems a bit forced to me. Like they were being weird for the sake of being weird. But that's just my opinion. I do like the album in the main.
I sort of have a problem with people that say that Barrett was a genius when his musical output was pretty small, he certainly had potential that's for sure. But his legendary status is mainly based on the fact that he fucked himself up on drugs and was a bit of a nutter.
The guy was mentally ill and as much as I can get curious about the whole drug lifestyle and anecdotes from the 60's, in the end it's quite sad how it ended for him (I had the same reaction when I read the excellent book about Keith Moon by Tony Fletcher, funny anecdotes about riotous behaviour but also painfully sad how the bloke couldn't help himself or let anyone else help him, when it was obvious he was ill). _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. Well, Piper is being weird on purpose, but there's an art to it. A band like like Melt Banana are just screamy weirdness, without that much skill. I happen to like them, but there's not much going on there. The thing with Piper is that they're all excellent musicians. There's a twelve minute version of Interstellar Overdrive that is masterful. I find it absorbing, fascinating and enjoyable in equal measure.
His solo work is pretty good too, Baby Lemonade? Great song. |
