You can go to Cheers and everything.
Actually NYC is better than Rochester AND Boston...with or without Eric Clapton. |
True dat!!! NYC is great (although I wouldn't want to live there...) - Cheers sucks. Let me just give you the heads-up there...the inside looks NOTHING like the show...just the exterior. And about a year ago they opened another "Cheers" at Faneuil Hall (the big tourist area) which basically has nothing to do with the show except they sell overpriced "Cheers" t-shirts and stuff...food is terrible and also extremely overpriced. |
Yeah I wouldn't want to live in NYC either. It's a great place to visit for a few days though.
I went in the original Cheers (can't remember what the real name of the bar is now) and the one at Faneuil Hall too a few years ago (2001). Bit of a tourist trap really - although you can't blame them for cashing in on the shows popularity. If I remember rightly there is some kind of Cheers bar in Logan Airport too, there is a photo somewhere of me in there with a Norm style pitcher of beer. Boston is a nice city though. Lots to see and the people were nice. The bloke that picked up up from the airport in the hotel shuttle bus was one of the funniest guys I've ever met over here. He had Mrs Chappo and myself in stitches - he's somewhat of a legend to us. The traffic was a bloody nightmare though - have they sorted it out yet? They were doing lots of construction when we were there. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

Oh yeah...it's changed a lot since '01...the "Big Dig" (the U.S.'s most expensive Federally funded infrastructure project) is now almost complete...minus a few leaks, and that woman's death in the tunnel which was completely horrible and inexcusable and I better not get on my soap box about it 'cause I'll freak out...thank God Romney is out of the Presidential running right now...that's all I'm gonna say...he's as incompetent as they come. Ok, so all that aside, traffic is really pretty minor now, and everything has been moved underground. We have a lovely new bridge, called the Zakim which I think is really pretty (especially with the lights at night) and just the overall downtown area is cleaning up well. Well, let me clarify...more like the waterfront area and near the North End...and also the Financial District...the downtown still needs a total overhaul...they need to move in some real stores that have some class and get rid of the trash they have there now...
As for sense of humor...most native Bostonians have a good one...much like people from the Tri-States *ahem*, like myself...New Yorkers to me, have the best wit though. I couldn't live in NY due to a few things a) the cost is just too much for me b) it's too dark c) I like nature too much - even more so as I get older. My favorite things are to be outside...whether at a park, the ocean, or just out walking amongst the trees or whatever...and being in the city wouldn't do it for me. Even with Central Park there, as I prefer wild places...
So Boston is a nice medium because the city is large enough to offer a lot of cultural variety, yet small enough to be able to "escape" so to speak and be out in the countryside relatively quickly. :) _________________ Android thus disabled... |

Thoughts on Ohio? thats aplace i want to go. mainly because from what ive seen/heard in films/books etc its very scenic and quite a tranquil place in parts, obviously its a big area so there'll be the usual cosmopolitan areas, but has anybody been there? _________________ When the weather outside is frightful,

Hmmm... it depends on what part of Ohio really. I've been through it a few times and it's quite "boring" to drive through from what I've seen. Mind you upstate NY is very boring to drive through as well - you can't always go on what you can see from a car.
I've only ever been to the northern part of Ohio really.
The only city in Ohio I have visited is Cleveland and to be honest it's a bit of a shithole. But I do have a soft spot for it for some reason (I think because it's a "blue collar" town and not just full of bankers and ponces like NYC). I've been to Cleavland 4 or 5 times, mainly for concerts. And of course it has the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" which is well worth a trip if you're in any way interested in music.
I've heard good things about Columbus. And we have good friends who have moved to Cincinatti and they like it there. We're going to go and visit them this year some time. It's apparantely in lockdown at the moment due to heavy snow though
Not sure how scenic the other parts of the state are. I know they had lots of pollution in the lakes in the past. And one of the rivers spontaneously caught fire due to pollution not so long back! _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. Yeah...ummm....Ohio isn't really on the "spectacular scenery" list for the U.S...there are far more, *ahem* impressive states...like Wyoming, Arizona, Montana, the Dakotas, Utah, Cali...God...I could go on and on...but Ohio is much like hmmm....Indiana, or western Pennsylvania...I mean, all those Midwestern (and/or Great Plains) states can be very beautiful if you hit them at the right time of year (late May - Oct.) - but then they turn brown and grey from November on. Chappo is right...it's much like upstate NY (although far less hilly...)...it can be pretty...but doesn't have anything fantastic to offer like the Grand Tetons, or Devil's Tower, or Yosemite, Grand Canyon, etc...etc...
Cincinnati is one of those blue-collar towns like Chappo said too...much like the Steel-belt towns of PA or industrial cities like Detroit that are suffering as more and more companies move their facilities to Mexico (thanks NAFTA - but hey...blame the corporations, not the laborers)...but that's another topic for another time...so yeah, it's a bit desolate. I do hear there are a lot of great bands coming out of Cincinnati lately though! And they do have that Rock & Roll Hall of fame & WKRP...lol! _________________ Android thus disabled... |

My favourite state out of all the ones we drove through on our drive to California a few years ago was definitely New Mexico. Absolutely beautiful scenery....stunning. I could barely keep my eyes on the road it was so nice to look at. Didn't actually stop in any cities in New Mexico though as we drove on through. Arizona is really great for scenery too.
And on the east coast I hear Maine is very lovely.
Have you read Bill Bryson's "The Lost Continent" ? He covers a lot of the states in that. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

Yeah NM is fricken fantastic. I always have (in the back of my mind...quite often actually)...the idea that whenever things really suck, that one of these days I'm just gonna pack it all in...literally, just pack up the car and hit the Southwest.
I was actually supposed to live in Arizona when I was a wee lass of 18, but an accident (among other things) left me stranded for a week in Deming (look it up) New Mexico while auto parts were shipped my way from Albuquerque. Long, long story...But anyway, despite all that drama, I fell in love with it out there...and have this calling to return, someday. I dunno when...that, or maybe the Outback. LOL! Wide open places ....that's what I'm talkin' about!
The thing is...I think I'd miss the ocean. _________________ Android thus disabled... |

Well we drove through (or around) Albuquerque and as our car was passing by the houses all these kids ran out of them and started busting some moves in the street. One of them stood on the hood of our car and started tap dancing and singing "There's No Business Like Showbusiness". then one other started doing this whole rap thing that he'd written himself and doing the human beatbox. It was like the bloody 'Kids From Fame' I can tell ya.
There were also lots of hot dogs and jumping frogs there too.
Some (or all) of this might not be true. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |
