Here's a thing...

Had a blast from the past again last night and got some of my old Prince albums and DVDs out. And I've come to the conclusion that there is no other artist that I have lost interest in as much as Prince.

I used to love Prince and have seen him live six or seven times. His peak was definitely 1986 - 1988. Those tours and albums - Parade, Sign O The Times and Lovesexy are fucking mindblowing. One of my fondest concert memories was when I was 14 and went on the bus from Nottingham to London on my own to see his Lovesexy tour at Wembley Arena in 1988. Amazing! (yes I was sad and went to gigs on my own all the time).

Then it all slowly went pear shaped. I still bought his albums and saw him live (the last time in 1998) but they became crapper and crapper each time. He went mental and changed his name and sued all the people that had fansites dedicated to him, generally alienated half of his fans and I lost interest.

His last two albums have done well and he has picked up more fans. I actually bought his last one '3121' in the first week it came out because it was hyped as a "return to form" It's crap! Just bland R&B that sounds like everyone else. It's more of a reflection on how crap R&B music has become lately though and how being different will not get you anywhere...better to go with the herd like Prince has done lately.

He's doing 21 gigs in London in a month or so and I couldn't give a fuck! At one point I would have seriously tried to fly back to go to as many of those shows as possible.

I still think he's probably the best musician on the planet and I would still see him live if he came to Rochester or Buffalo. But I wouldn't go out of my way and travel to Toronto on a weeknight to see him like I would with other people (he came to Toronto last year on a Wednesday and we didn't go cos it would mean a day off work!)

It's sad.

But at least I have Sign Of The Times and Lovesexy on my mp3 player and I'm downloading more live DVDs from his heyday so I can reminise about the good days.

(I'd link to some youtube vids of classic performances if he hadn't had them ALL taken down. What a twat!)

Purple Rain is the only one I've heard, but it didn't do much for me.

Yeah. Purple Rain is his biggest seller and the album is really good but his best stuff came in the years after. That run of albums from 1986 - 1988 is really good stuff. Sign O The Times in particular.

He is (was?) a purple mental genius. It's sad how crap he is now :(

Well, he wrote Nothing Compares 2 U (urgh, "2 u") so I've never written him off completely.

Lest we forget, he also wrote "Manic Monday" for The Bangles - shabba!

Oh yes indeed. And he had a bit of a "thing" for Susanna Hoffs too. Well haven't we all?

LOL. Very Happy

Yeah that is a rumour...probably not true (only his music sucks these days). I also heard the same rumour about Marilyn Manson too.

That really is extravagant, anyway. Some simple yoga will avoid invasive surgery nicely.

That's pretty funny. The only way you can get the album is by buying the mail.

I would, but I'm not getting up early in the morning to buy a copy of the mail on sunday for fuck sake. I expect they'll all be gone by lunch time, anyway.

You won't be missing much to be honest. It'll be shit.

This is how Prince became popular again and started having hits, by giving his albums away.

His album 'Musicology' from 2004 was the album that got him back in the charts. The only reason it got so many "sales" was due to the fact that you got a free copy of the album when you bought a ticket to a show on his tour. These freebies (not really free obviously) counted as a sale and so the album got to number 1 (I think).

Sounds like there is a similar thing going on for this latest album *sigh*

I wish he'd release another album that was genuinely exciting and that he didn't have to give away. I used to "wag" off school to go down and buy his albums on the day they came out... but no more. (partly becausue I'm not at school anymore of course!)

Well I got hold of the album he gave away with the Mail On Sunday and it's actually pretty good! I'm pleasantly surprised actually. A few shitty tracks but nothing too offensive. The single "Guitar" is one of the best things he's done for ages, appropriately he's actually playing some guitar again now too....he's a fucking amazing guitarist!

Hmmmm....maybe I was too hasty in saying I don't give a shit about his London shows. Neutral

I think he's off his "born-again" kick that's why...whenever musicians seem to become Jesus freaks they lose it...then when they're feeling better they get back on it. Generally speaking that is. I heard a few years back that Prince wouldn't perform any of his "sexual" music anymore, so that cuts out a hella-lot of good tunes...but then I saw him play at the Superbowl, and it was clear when he used his guitar as a phallus that he was back in old form again. :) Gotta love him!

Exactly. He went through a phase of censoring his songs when he did them live. Not very effective when the bulk of your material veers towards the sexual side of life!

I do like his new album though, it has a playfulness about it that has been missing from his more recent stuff. And it rocks! There is guitar on there and everything! Even some cameos from The Revolution! Shocked

He's a Jehovah Witness now and so still keeps the language in check though. But he still has a knack for a catchy tune here and there! :)

He's a Jehovah's Witness? Maybe that's what he's always been, I'm not sure...but I thought he got off that? He wasn't looking to religious at the Superbowl with that guitar in his crotch...ha ha. Wink

I heard Beck was into Scientology a few years back too...that's when he sorta dropped off the map...he had an album or two which were good, (albeit kinda depressing), but I think I recently heard a new song of his on the radio which was really good...more like his old self and I wondered if he hadn't stepped away from the Scientology?
