(say it like Partridge says "a lorry sliding on its back for aggggeess")
So, I've been looking through my CDs (what the fuck does CD stand for?) and listening to stuff I haven't listened to for years, mainly britpop albums. First up was The Great Escape, I thought it was the bees disfigured knees for a while but it sounds a bit shallow and lazy now, which is a shame. Still it has the obvious brilliant songs like The Universal, Ernold Same and He Thought of Cars.
Next was Smart by Sleeper. I still love Louise Wener, she's got the best sex voice ever, ney, best voice ever. I enjoyed this Smart album quite alot, some good tunes but you can tell why they had shelf life. Youtube is down at the moment but I'll come back with some lovely Louise videos on there when its back.
Next I'm gonna listen to Be Here Now, against by better judgement. So I'll report back because I know you all can't sleep until you know what I think about it. As I remember it, from when I first heard it about four years ago, it's quite bad. One song has about 36 guitar tracks on it, but it should at least be interesting.
Now it's your turn, homies. |

Yep. Sleeper were a pretty good band. Wener wrote some underrated Britpop anthems (Vegas, Sale Of The Century, What Do I Do Now). I actually prefer the second album 'The It Girl' over 'Smart'...but both are really good. Haven't heard the third album but I know it got panned when it came out and effectively ended their career. Has anyone read any of Wener's novels? I might have to dig out some of my old homemade Britpop compilation videos tonight. Got lots of Sleeper's appearences on TFI, Big Breakfast etc.....might have a wank if the missus goes out.

| Yeah, there's alot on youtube, suprisingly. Including a piano number on TFI Friday that's quite nice. She dedicated it to Southgate. |

She was on Shooting Stars as well once. I think she was sat in the "fit bird" seat so Vic was doing all his "rubbing his thighs" palarver to her through the show! :) _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

She did that a lot...especially on TFI. I think it was to tease Chris Evans who made no secret of how much he fancied her. I always got the impression that she actually secretley hated him though.
I remember when Sleeper were on that Britpop Now show doing 'Inbetweener' and Louise had a tight tank-top thing on..and it was plainly obvious that she wasn't wearing a bra underneath (i've gone all dizzy just now). I remember watching that with my Mum and her saying "she's very pretty, hasn't she's got lovely eyes".
The only thing about her was that she really couldn't sing live very well. There is an acoustic version of 'Delicious' that they did backstage at Glastonbury one year that I've got on video, and it's almost embarrasing to watch.
Bless her though. Underrated when it comes to songwriting. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

How lovely! :)
I wish I had the equipment to transfer my videos to PC and DVD. I've got lots of great stuff from 1996 and 1997 on tape.
They did a sketch called "Louise Wener Relief Teacher" on TFI once. Where she arrived at the school in a Mini cooper and walked into a classroom to teach a class...who were all besotted with her. She taught them "The Classics" starting with 'Bohemian Rhapsody' if I remember rightly.
I also remember there was some kind of dream sequence once on TFI where she met George Best and Sting.
I also have a clip from The Ozone where they interview her in her flat while she's making an omlette. That was funny.
Why can't it be 1996 again, Daddy? Why????!!!!! _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

| You should get a video card! They're pretty cheap and you don't need anything fancy for just transferring from VHS to digital. |

Along with Louise, who has actually aged rather well unlike some of her peers.
Although judging from that she now lives in a crack den and one of her clients condom split. |

Yeah, I downloaded that documentary and burnt it to DVD. When I first watchced it Mrs Chappo (who's completed my crash course in Britpop) commented "Wow...she's been at the pies a bit in the last few years!" She's still living with the drummer from Sleeper I think isn't she? The dirty little bugger!
She looks very lovely on the 'Live Forever' documentary as well.
I've just realised that when I see her with a guitar it has the same effect on me as seeing Susannah Hoffs with a guitar .
It can't be put into words. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

Look at me, pictures galore! I prefer Live Forever to that Britpop story thing, John Harris annoys me a bit, although his book was good and informative. |

Wow. I'm impressed with your picture prowess today. Well done!
Can you find any naked Susannah Hoffs photos? Cos I'm not having much luck. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |

Talking of 1996 (to get slightly back on topic)...This morning I decided to listen to The Cardigans album 'First Band On The Moon' on my way to work. I'd forgotten just what a great album that was. Obviously the most famous song on there is 'Lovefool' but it is not really indicative of the album as a whole. In fact the follow up single 'Been It' kicks quite a substantial amount of arse.
I love the production of that album too. And it has to be said that the lead singer Nina Persson has a lovely voice and is rather easy on the eyes (when I saw them at Rock City that year I was right at the front and centre and got to look up between her legs throughout the gig..which was nice).
No bad tracks on the album, in fact 'Lovefool' is the only track I skip...but only because it got played to death at the time.
Shame the follow up album 'Gran Turismo' was a bit of a disapointment. Their last couple of albums are supposed to be good though, I should catch up with them. _________________ "For all his horses, knighthoods and championships, he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls!" |
